Music/Steel Drums Band
Course Requirements: Students in General Music/Steel Drums are enrolled for one marking period. Students come to class each day to learn music vocabulary, basic music theory, and proper steel drum playing techniques. Students are required to participate in class each day and are required to bring their binder and agenda to class every day.
Rules & Procedures: Students have developed a Working Agreement that we will follow for the year. There are 5 agreements that they came up with, voted on, and signed. They are displayed at the back of the room by our steel band materials.
On a class work day: Students come in, find their seats, put their belongings under their chair, and check the board for the day’s agenda. Class typically starts with any announcements, followed classwork lesson for the day. At the end of class, students gather their belongings and are dismissed.
On a playing day: Students come in and may be responsible for setting up their instrument (if their instrument is already set up they go directly to their instrument), once the instruments are set up, students get 5 minutes to practice something they learned in the previous class. Students will always practice with hands before we add mallets. Once practice time is over, students begin the steel band playing lesson for the day. At the end of class, students may have to break down their instrument and put them away (if they don’t have to break down they will gather their things and dismiss with the bell). Once the instruments have been broken down, students gather their belongings, put their materials back inside their binders, find a seat, and dismiss with the bell.
