8 Mathematical Practices – What we will be striving to reach in most lessons.

Common Core mathematics is a way to approach teaching so that students develop a mathematical mindset and see math in the world around them. We are making problem-solvers. No matter what your objectives, textbook, or grade level, the eight mathematical practice standards are a guide to good math instruction.

1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively
3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning others.
4. Model with mathematics
5. Use appropriate tools strategically
6. Attend to precision
7. Look for and make use of structure
8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

Units We Will Be Studying

• Module 1-Integer Exponents and Scientific Notation
• Module 2-The Concept of Congruence
• Module 3-Dilation
• Module 4-Linear Equations
• Module 5-Examples from Functions from Geometry
• Module 6-Linear Functions
• Module 7-Intro to Irrational Numbers Using Geometry

The following supplies are needed:

• pencils with erasers
• one set of dividers
• Loose leaf/graph paper
• 2 Composition Books

Classroom Procedures/Policies

1. Homework will be given almost every night. All homework should be completed and placed in the 3-ring binder.  Homework will be scored nightly using the following a two-point rubric:

• 2 points-the assignment is complete.
• 1 points- the assignment was attempted.
• 0 point –the homework was not attempted.

2. Late work Policy: Late work will be accepted up to 3 days after it was due. The first day late will result in a 10% reduction, the second day late is a 20% reduction, and the third day late is a 30% reduction from what the grade would have been if it had been turned in on time.  After 3 days, the late work will no longer be accepted. 
3. You will be expected to keep an organized binder and keep all papers within that binder for the marking period.
4. Makeup work will be placed into the Absent Bin and is your responsibility to complete.
5. Active participation in class is necessary for the student to obtain the most from the educational experience. Students will be expected to actively contribute to classroom discussions keeping in mind the classroom and school expectations as they do so.
6. Plagiarism and cheating are academic dishonesty and will not be tolerated. Any student who is academically dishonest will have a teacher/student conference regarding the issue and will receive a zero on the assignment.  Parents and school administration will be notified and further action may be taken.
